L-Theanine and Pregnancy

No clinical studies have been conducted on L-theanine and pregnancy at this time. Although many pregnant women try to avoid medications and turn to alternative remedies instead, it is important to know that "natural" products can also be quite toxic. Until more information is available about the safety of L-theanine, pregnant women may want to avoid using this supplement.

An Overview of L-Theanine and Pregnancy

L-theanine (also known as just theanine) is an amino acid found in tea and also used in dietary supplements. As with most supplements, it is not known whether L-theanine is safe for use in pregnancy. Therefore, you should not take L-theanine during pregnancy without your healthcare provider's approval and supervision.

Is L-Theanine Safe for Pregnant Women?

It is not known whether L-theanine is safe for pregnant women. There are no reliable studies that show that L-theanine is safe (or unsafe), since it has not been adequately studied in any pregnant women or animals. In fact, L-theanine has not been thoroughly studied in humans (pregnant or not) for any use.
Keep in mind that just because other pregnant women have used a natural product without problems does not mean that it is safe. It takes a large group of pregnant women taking a particular medication (or supplement) to see if it increases the risk of problems (such as miscarriages or birth defects), since these problems usually occur infrequently. Many women try to avoid medications in pregnancy and turn to alternative remedies instead, assuming that "natural" automatically means "safe." However, natural products can be quite toxic. For instance, many poisons and toxins are natural products. It just does not make sense to use a dietary supplement for which there is no information available about safety during pregnancy.
If you are pregnant, it is always a good idea to ask your healthcare provider before taking any medication or supplement. You and your healthcare provider can consider the possible risks and benefits of using L-theanine in your particular situation, as well as any other treatment alternatives.
