Namenda® (memantine hydrochloride) is a medication used for treating moderate to severe dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease. It is thought that some of the symptoms of Alzheimer's may be related to changes in NMDA receptors; by binding to the NMDA receptor and preventing excessive excitation by glutamate (a neurotransmitter brain chemical), the drug can help slow the decline of cognitive function. Namenda is available by prescription only and comes in the form of tablets and an oral solution.
