What is dementia? Dementia is a descriptive term for a collection of symptoms caused by a number of disorders that affect the brain. It is not a specific disease all by itself. Many different conditions can cause it, including Alzheimer's. When two or more brain functions -- such as memory, language skills, perception, or cognitive skills -- are significantly impaired without loss of consciousness, a person is typically diagnosed with dementia.
