As many as 6.8 million people in the United States have dementia, a progressive decline in cognitive function due to diseases that affect the brain. It can be caused by many conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and frontotemporal dementia. People with symptoms may experience memory loss, lose their ability to maintain emotional control and solve problems, and experience behavioral problems and personality changes. Drugs used to treat progressive dementias are now available to improve symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.
