Alzheimer's Research

Research is being conducted to better understand and treat Alzheimer's. Research studies currently under way include those focused on the role genetics may play in the development of the disease and how neuroimaging can help with early diagnosis. A number of drugs are also being tested to see if they will prevent Alzheimer's, slow down the disease, or help reduce symptoms.

An Introduction to Alzheimer's Research

Doctors and scientists all over the country are conducting research on Alzheimer's. These studies are designed to answer important questions and to find out whether new approaches are safe and effective. Research has already led to many advances, and investigators are continuing to search for more effective methods of dealing with Alzheimer's disease.

Current Focus of Research on Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's research scientists are studying various aspects of the disease. Recent research studies, including those currently under way, are focused on the following areas:

  • Genetics
  • Mild cognitive impairment
  • Neuroimaging
  • Inflammation
  • Medications
  • Antioxidants
  • Ginkgo biloba
  • Estrogen.

Genetics
Although scientists conducting Alzheimer's research do not yet fully understand what causes the condition, the more they learn, the more they become aware of the important function genes play in the development of this devastating disease (see Alzheimer's and Genes).
