Alzheimer's Research

Alzheimer's research is being conducted to better understand and treat the disease. Research studies currently under way include those focused on the role genetics may play in the development of Alzheimer's. Research is also being done to test a number of drugs to see if they will prevent Alzheimer's disease, slow the disease, or help to reduce symptoms. Scientists are also investigating the effectiveness of using neuroimaging to identify Alzheimer's disease in its early stages and monitor the progression of the disease.

An Overview of Alzheimer's Research

Doctors and scientists all over the country are conducting Alzheimer's research. Alzheimer's research studies are designed to answer important questions and to find out whether new approaches are safe and effective. Research has already led to many advances, and researchers are continuing to search for more effective methods of dealing with Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Current Focus of Alzheimer's Research

Alzheimer's research scientists are studying various aspects of AD. Recent research studies (and those currently under way) include those focused on the following:

  • Genetics
  • Mild cognitive impairment
  • Neuroimaging
  • Inflammation
  • Medications
  • Antioxidants
  • Ginkgo biloba
  • Estrogen.

Genetics
Although Alzheimer's research scientists do not yet fully understand what causes AD, the more they learn, the more they become aware of the important function genes play in the development of this devastating disease (see Alzheimer's and Genes).
